Merrickville, the Jewel of the Rideau, prides itself in its artistic community, boasting over thirty local artist and artisans. Merrickville was already a well-established industrial centre when the canal was being built. Because of its importance, the largest of the canal’s four blockhouses was built in Merrickville. This stone and timber fortress, complete with moat and drawbridge, was built to protect the canal and the town. The Blockhouse now serves as a museum. Merrickville has many beautiful heritage buildings.
